Accepted for publication 21 December 1992 Abstract Gastric emptying of liquid (orange juice containing technetium-99m ('Tc) labelled antimony sulphide colioid) and solid (570 kcal pancake containing O 5 mm resin microspheres labelled with Indiun-ll ("'-In)) was measured in seven patients with jejunum and no colon (jejunal lengths 30-160 cm), six patients with jejunum in continuity with the colon (jejunal length 25-75 cm), and in 12 normal subjects. In patients with no colon early emptying of liquid was rapid (median 25% emptying: 7 v 25 min, no colon v normal, p<O05); early gastric emptying of solid was rapid in two (each with less than 100 cm jejunum) and normal in the other five. Gastric emptying of liquid and solid for patients with jejunum in continuity with the colon was normal for the first three hours. There was increased liquid and solid retained in the stomach at six hours in both groups of patients (p<O-Ol). Small bowel transit time was faster than in normal subjects for liquid in both groups of patients (p<0.05) and for solid in those with no colon (p<O05). Rapid gastric emptying of liquid may contribute to the large stomal output in patients with a high jejunostomy. Preservation of the colon after a major small intestinal resection exerts a braking effect on the rate of early gastric emptying of liquid. (Gut 1993; 34: 1171-1176)

Gastrointestinal hormones in short bowel syndrome. Peptide YY may be the 'colonic brake' to gastric emptying.
BACKGROUND Short bowel patients with a jejunostomy have large volume stomal outputs, which may in part be due to rapid gastric emptying of liquid. Short bowel patients with a preserved colon do not have such a high stool output and gastric emptying of liquid is normal. AIMS To determine if differences in the gastric emptying rate between short bowel patients with and without a colon can be re...
متن کاملThe effects of cyclooxygenase inhibitors on the gastric emptying and small intestine transit in the male rats following traumatic brain injury
Objective(s):This study was carried out to investigate the effects of COX-2 selective inhibitor (Celecoxib) or non-selective COX inhibitor (Ibuprofen) on gastrointestinal motility. Materials and Methods: The rats were randomly divided into five groups including: intact, sham, traumatic brain injury (TBI) group (intact rats under TBI), Celecoxib group (10 mg/kg), Ibuprofen group (10 mg/kg). Rats...
متن کاملScintigraphic evaluation of gastric emptying after greater curvature plication in comparison with sleeve gastrectomy
Introduction: Laparoscopic gastric plication (LGP) is a relatively new restrictive bariatric procedure that emerged to avoid the problems and to reduce the cost of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. In this study we present the initial short-term outcome of LGP and its effect on gastric emptying and compare it with the results of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). <stro...
متن کاملGut adaptation and the glucagon-like peptides.
The glucagon-like peptides GLP-1 and GLP-2 are synthesised and then released from enteroendocrine cells in the small and large intestine. GLP-1 promotes efficient nutrient assimilation while GLP-2 regulates energy absorption via effects on nutrient intake, gastric acid secretion and gastric emptying, nutrient absorption, and mucosal permeability. Preliminary human studies indicate that GLP-2 ma...
متن کاملSimultaneous measurement of gastric emptying, small bowel residence and colonic filling of a solid meal by the use of the gamma camera.
A method for determining the profiles of gastric emptying, small intestinal residence, and colonic filling of a solid test meal, labelled with 250 microCi 99mTechnetium sulphur colloid has been evaluated in nine healthy volunteers and six patients with a disturbance in bowel habit. Mean small bowel transit time was determined by deconvolving the rate of colonic filling with the rate of gastric ...
